Poplarville Romps Past Bobcats for Homecoming Win

The glitz and glamour of Homecoming poured over onto the football field as the Hornets out shined the Sumrall Bobcats 56-6 in a huge District 7-4A victory.  The win was the sixth straight for the Poplarville Hornet Football Team and third in a row in District competition.  The Hornets record now sits at 6-1 overall and 3-0 within the District.  The game was much in control by Poplarville as they went in at halftime up 35-0.  The first score of the game came on a 31 yard TD romp by Jesse Pernell, his first of 3 TDs on the night.  Sumrall’s offense struggled to sniff out yardage against a Hornet Defense that held them to -4 total yards until just before halftime.  The Bobcats only TD came on a long TD run early in the third quarter.  The Hornet Defense has now held District 7-4A opponents to just 26 points in 3 games which ranks first in District 7-4A.  Sophomore QB Antonio Barnes only threw three times, but made the most of it connecting on 2 of them for TDs.  Tyson Holston hauled in a 41 yard TD pass in the corner of the end zone and Junior RB Austin Bolton caught a 60 yard TD pass from Barnes on the second play of the 3rd quarter.  Bolton also had a TD run earlier in the contest.  The leading rusher for the Hornets was Sophomore Ross Barnett.  Barnett carried the ball only 3 times, but found the end zone on 2 of his carries and managed to rush for 113 yards.  With the 56-6 win the Hornets secure a playoff berth for the 5th consecutive season.  The Hornets will travel to Purvis for a big District contest this Friday.  The Tornadoes are also 3-0 in the District and the winner will determine the District 7-4A Champion.
