Poplarville Soccer Looking to Finish Strong

Poplarville soccer is now into the second half of their season. Both teams are looking to finish strong and earn a spot in the 4A state playoffs. The Lady Hornet soccer team has a record of 13-3-1 overall with a 4-1 district record. Lady Hornets are led by senior Mallory Nuccio. Mallory is leading the team in goals scored (18) and assist (7). She also is currently 5th in the state in goals scored in 4A. Merisa Myrick (Junior) is currently second on the team in goals scored (17) and sits at 6th in the state in goals scored in 4A. Holding the opposition from scoring this season is Kaitlyn Barber (Junior). Kaitlyn Leads the state in 4A with 98 saves. She is also second in 4A with a 1.3 goals against average. The Lady Hornets have scored 64 goals on the year and have had 17 goals scored against them.  They have 4 games remaining on the schedule with 3 of those being district contests.

On the boys side, the hornets have a team record of 10-3-2 overall and 2-1 in district play. They are led by Senior and Southwest Community College signee Derrick Houston who has 10 goals on the season. Derrick is currently 8th in 4A in goals scored. Coach Smith also is excited that some injured players are getting healthy. “Ethan McIntyre (Junior) coming back has helped us out a good bit. He is a very good player for us and we benefit from having him back in the lineup.” Austin Carter (Junior) is 2nd in 4A with 0.6 goals against average and is 5th in 4A with 89 saves. The Hornets have scored 34 goals this season and have allowed 11 goals against them.  They also have 4 games remaining on the schedule with 3 of those being district contests.

Both teams will play Greene County at home Tuesday, January 12th with game times starting at 5:30.  They will then travel to East Central Friday January 15th.
