Porter to Lead PHS Boys' Basketball |

High School News

 July 12, 2010, Bill Porter Jr. was hired at Poplarville High School as the new head coach of the PHS Hornets boys’ basketball team after thirteen years of coaching success throughout his career.
Porter recently coached at Dothan High School, Headland High School, Dallas County High School, Selma High School, and Wilcox High School all in Alabama. Porter recently won the 2010 Area Champions at Dothan, the 2008 Wireglass Athletic Conference Coach of The Year, and the 2008 Wireglass Athletics Conference Champions and Area Champions at Dothan.
“I’m happy to be here. We hit the ground running with our conditioning and I’m looking forward to the year progressing as we get to the start of the season,” Porter stated.
Porter will be looking to improve upon last year’s record of 8 wins and 19 losses. |

The Poplarville Hornets will be hosting their annual “Meet the Hornets” pep rally again this year, on Thursday August 12, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the PHS Football Stadium.
“Meet the Hornets” is the Poplarville Hornets annual pre-season pep rally. It is held to introduce all of the teams and let them show their Hornet spirit. Each team will be introduced individually along with their coaches.
“Meet the Hornets” will consist of The Poplarville Football team, Dance team, Soccer team, Band, and the Cheerleading Squad.
Many of the football players are looking forward to the year to come. “We have a lot of young talent this year, along with great senior leadership.” said Drake Hodges, the quarterback for the High School. |

High School News
|
Early this summer at the end of May, the Poplarville High School Cheerleaders attended a cheer camp instructed by the United Cheerleading Association at USM in Hattiesburg, MS.
One of the most prestigious awards that the girls won at camp was the inflatable banana, an award given to the squad who shows the most outstanding display of school spirit. To claim this prize, the squad painted their entire bodies with green paint and painted letters on their shirts. When asked about the green paint, Katie Whitworth commented, “When we walked in, their jaws dropped and they all just stared at us.”
The girls brought home numerous blue ribbons and were ranked superior overall.
Of the fifteen girls, Haylee Burge, Katie Whitworth, Raven Nightengale, Kaitlyn Dupont and Stephanie Dedeaux were nominated to try out for the All American Cheer Squad. Katie Whitworth was honored to be chosen for a spot on the national squad. When asked about the camp experience, Coach Sarah Smith said, “I was proud of how well the girls represented Poplarville High School. I am really looking forward to working with this extremely talented squad.” |

The Poplarville High School “Green Machine” Marching Band will be holding camps on the following dates:
Color Guard: July 20 – 22 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Percussion: July 22 – 23 from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Rookies and Section Leaders: July 22 – 23 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Full Band: July 26 – 30 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Lunch will be from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM

Poplarville Lower Elementary will have Get Acquainted Day on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Parents and students who wish to attend can meet their teacher and bring school supplies. Any new Kindergarten students who have not registered or finalized registration can also do so during this time or any other day before then during regular office hours. Please call the office at (601) 795-4736 to verify what documentation you will need to bring with you. |

Poplarville Upper Elementary is excited about the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Parents and students are invited to attend Get Acquainted Day at Poplarville Upper Elementary on August 3, 2010, from 1:30 until 3:00. During this time students will receive their homeroom assignment and have the opportunity to bring in their school supplies. Due to staff meetings, teachers will only be availiable during this time on Tuesday. Any Poplarville School District enrolled third grader who has not re-verified their residency to enroll in PUE may do so at this time.

Middle School News

|
With the start of the 2010-11 school year quickly approaching, the Middle School of Poplarville students can pick-up their schedules beginning Monday, July 26, 2010 until Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 8:30 am until 3:00 pm at the MSP office. At this time, PSD enrolled students who transfer to grade 6 can re-verify their residency in order to transfer to MSP. The parent or legal guardian must provide MSP with at least two proofs of residency. The following are accepted proofs of residency: filed homestead exemption application, mortgage documents or property deed, apartment or home lease, utility bills, driver’s license, voter precinct identification, automobile registration, affidavit of residency, etc.
Make plans to attend sixth grade Get Aquainted Day, on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 9:00 AM until 12 noon. At this time, sixth grade students will have the opportunity to meet their teachers.
