The PHS players announce the cast for the upcoming presentation of Harvey, a play by Mary Chase. The production dates are April 30th, May 1st and May 2nd Harvey is a play about a man, Elwood, who sees an imaginary rabbit. He's sent to a mental institution and eventually a pivotal question is brought up. That question is summarized by a quote from the author Mary Chase, Years ago my mother said to me, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.
Thirty-nine students are participating in this year's production of Harvey. Over the past five years the Theatre/Film class has worked with hundreds of students, from the 80 plus students who were involved in the 2007 production of Grease, to the 20 students who were involved in the 2006 production of Whodunit and If Girls Asked Boys. Theatre/Film teacher Mel Hall has produced six plays since taking over the department in 2005-06 school year.
Stepping in after Katrina was a challenge, the kids needed something to do, said Mr. Hall. Theatre allows students who are otherwise not active in extracurricular activities the ability to participate.
The characters in Harvey include:
Paul Ferguson in the lead role as Elwood P. Dowd, an eccentric whose best friend is a six foot rabbit; Elizabeth Jones as Veta Louise Simmons, who is Elwood's sister and fearful that Elwood's imaginary friend will prevent her daughter Myrtle from landing a husband; Karelia Schmitz as Myrtle Mae Simmons, the daughter of Veta and niece of Elwood who is seeking a husband; Stephen Harris as Dr. William B. Chumley, the local psychiatrist who initially attempts to treat Elwood and then comes to see the imaginary rabbit himself; Conner Hodge as Dr. Lyman Sanderson, an employee of Dr. Chumley who has a love-hate relationship with nurse Kelly; Gabby Bilbo as Ruth Kelly, R.N., also an employee of Dr. Chumley who is involved with Dr. Sanderson; Jessica Raziano is Judge Oprah Gaffney, the Dowd family lawyer who arranges for Elwood's commitment; Sierra Luke as Ethel Chauvenet, a longtime friend of the Dowds and part of the social circle of the town; Ashleigh Davis as Betty Chumley, wife of Dr. Chumley and aware of Elwood's imaginary friend; Glenn Camardelle as Wilson, the muscle at Dr. Chumley's sanitarium; Matthew Weatherholt as the cab driver who delivers common sense philosophy; and Bridget Thrash as Miss Johnson, a cateress for the social events in the town. In addition Corina Smith, Katelyn Ducote, Miranda Buckley, Shelby Ramming, Victoria Mitchell, Marie Cavanaugh, Brice Smith, Lexie Fircke, Sylvia Ducote, and Joshua Davis have been cast as town's people.
In addition to the cast, a group of over 20 students will run the show as the crew. The crew for Harvey includes:
Tiernay Henry, Angela Gonzales, LaKetha Fowler, Austin Slade, Kendra Hoosen, Dain Saucier, Rebekah Broom, Cassye Owen, Brian Secrist, Dakota Kern, Joshua Mitchell, Amber Dardar, John Antonetti, and Nikole Talkington. In addition Dean Shorba and Melanie Hall are directing the play, Jacob Cochran is the stage manager, and Megan Smith is producing it.
