Carolyn Seals Fifth Grade Discovery students at PUE have just completed a simulation entitled Agency. Agency was designed to give students insight into the psychology and production of advertising in America. The simulation examined various rules, techniques, tricks, and gimmicks that are used to promote and sell everything from deodorants to computers. The students began by examining different types of advertising such as television commercials, magazine ads, and billboards. Legitimate and legal techniques were studied as well as unethical and often illegal techniques such as half-true statements and misleading photography. Students became members of one of 8 advertising agencies. Each agency chose two products for which they completed total advertising campaigns including billboards, magazine ads, and radio and television commercials. All of the agencies did a wonderful job on their campaigns.
