Band Birthday Calendars

The PHS and MSP Band students are currently doing the annual Birthday Calendar sale. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar, the price is $8.00 if you wish to order without including any birthday listings or $10.00 if you wish to include up to 8 listings. The calendars will have a picture of the High School band in addition to ads from local businesses. All birthday and anniversary listings that are purchased will also be included on every calendar ordered. These calendars will be for the 2011 year. They make excellent Christmas gifts for anyone. If you wish to order a calendar, see any band student or Mr. Tidwell to place your order.

It's Time for Little Hornet Cheer Day!

The Poplarville High School Cheerleaders will have their annual Little Hornet Cheer Day on Saturday, August 28, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the PHS gym. The cost is $25.00 per child. Each child will receive a Little Hornet Cheer T-shirt for their participation. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Deadline to sign up is Thursday, August 26, 2010. Ages 4 to 12. Please join us for a fun day of cheering and dancing! The little hornet cheerleaders will perform before the PHS vs. Lumberton football game on Friday, September 3, 2010. The performance will begin at 6:30.

Poplarville School District Announces Attendance Policy Update

There is a direct correlation between attendance in school and academic achievement. Students who go to class invariably do better in school and maximize their chances for success down the road. As part of the ongoing dropout prevention initiative known as PRIDE, Poplarville School District has updated its attendance policy for the 2010-2011 school year. The new policy reads” No more than eight absences will be excused with a parent’s note. Absences in excess of eight may be excused upon presentation of a medical statement signed by a licensed practitioner or at the discretion of the principal after an at-school conference with the parent/guardian: however, this will not automatically result in the excused absence.” The policy also reads “A student has no more than five school days from the date of return to school to have the absence(s) excused. If the absence is not verified by a note within the allowed time, the absence will be recorded as unexcused. The statement should provide an explanation sufficient to indicate to the school’s administration that the student was unable to attend classes for a lawfully recognized reason for the period of his/her absence(s) and must list the date(s) of the absence(s).” As required by Mississippi Attendance Law, reports will be made to the School Attendance Officer when a student has five and twelve unexcused absences. New DARE Truck Design

At the end of last school year, officer Al Tynes of the Poplarville Police Department unveiled the new DARE truck. The Dare truck is a 2006 Ford F-150 with a graphic Vinyl wrap purchased with donations by local businesses who donate yearly to the DARE program. “Our purpose for the truck is to teach our students to make good choices,” says Tynes. Besides the obvious DARE program graphics, there are many important details on the truck. On the tail gate is a shield representing the officers who have died in the line of duty and also a cross “because our country was founded in God.” Interestingly, the back ground of the truck is the side of an old World War ll battle plane. Completing the decorations for now is a flag on the hood which represents our country. The truck is a work in progress there will be more details added.

Here's a list of the official supply lists for the Poplarville School District for the 2010-2011 school year:

Poplarville Lower Elementary

Kindergarten

1 pkg. Crayola washable markers (Broad-tip, Classic Colors)
8 boxes Crayola Brand Crayons (No Rose Art Brand)
10 Elmer’s Brand glue sticks (not glue sticks for glue guns)
1 large box Kleenex
2 3-prong plastic folders with pockets (not 3 ring notebook)
1 1 pair FISKAR scissors (rounded ends only)
2 pkgs. WHITE construction paper (true white not off white and NO drawing paper- found at Hobby Lobby and School & Carnival Stores)
1 pkg. solid color construction paper (No multi-color packs- found at Hobby Lobby and School & Carnival Stores)
1 8½” x 11” clipboard
1 8” x 10” zippered pencil bag
2 pack of pink erasers (not pencil tops)
1 pack of Clorox /Lysol wipes
1 package of WHITE lunch bags (found at Walmart or Hobby Lobby)
1 thin plastic red and blue mat for rest time (not extra thick)
1 backpack without wheels – no purse size backpacks - Find one that is easy to open with a very simple zipper closure and few or no pockets.
1 change of clothes - extra uniform with underwear and socks (please label all clothes with your child’s name)

Boy’s

1 hand sanitizer (8 oz. or larger)

1 quart size Ziploc bags

1 box of baby wipes

1 gallon Zipper top Ziploc bags

Note

Please label ALL items that only your child will use such rest mat, bookbag,

pencil bag, crayons, clipboard, scissors, folders, glue sticks, markers, and extra change of clothes. There is NO need to label items that will be used by all students such as tissue, sanitizer, clorox wipes, construction paper, lunch or Ziploc bags.

A $15 instructional fee will be due on the day of Meet the Teacher. This fee is to cover instructional materials such as consumable workbooks, etc… that your child will use throughout the year.
