Its hard to believe that we are preparing for our 10th Renaissance/Madrigal Dinner, says PHS Choir Director Janet Kennedy. Our first Feaste was in 1992. We did it again in 1993 and quickly realized that we needed to go to an every other year schedule for a number of reasons. First, the dinner is a huge undertaking, requiring months of preparation. Secondly, I hated for the students not to get an opportunity to learn, sing and enjoy sharing traditional Christmas music. It was because of those two reasons that we decided to do the Renaissance Dinners on the odd year Christmases and regular Christmas programs on the even year Christmases. It has worked out well for us and many people have made the Madrigal Dinner a Christmas tradition.
Since this is our 10th Dinner, we want it to be extra special! We are hoping that many Choir alumni will be able to attend the dinner. We have some special things planned for any alumni who are able to come. We would love to see them dress in costume and participate in some of the standard songs like the Wassail Toasting Song , The Boars Head and the traditional closer, Peace, Peace but costumes are not required, of course. We are also hoping that our former Kings, Queens and Royal Court members will be in attendance. We have special seating reserved for them and will recognize them as visiting Royalty during the program.
Something new this year is the addition of a Princess Procession leading in the King and Queen. Several girls from the Lower and Upper Elementary Choirs will be selected to lead the procession of the Royal Court and participate in the closing musical selection. How exciting!
Our 2009 King and Queen are Lord Wilson Wise and Lady Emily Wise. Their Royal court consists of Lord Bill Nix and Lady Robin Nix & Lord Raby Fink and Lady Sharon Bayles.
Tickets will be available from any PHS Choir member or Director Janet B. Kennedy (601-795-8372) until December 10th at a cost of $20. We hope you will join us for this special holiday event!

Mrs. Kilgores first grade class celebrated the Thanksgiving season by writing a class book. Students learned about the writing process and worked hard to create a manuscript that was sent to a publishing company. An author celebration and book signing was held to share the project with students parents and families. The book is entitled, Let Us Give Thanks and includes writing and illustrations from each student. |

Many of you have heard on the news about this heartbreaking situation. While the rest of the world prepares for Thanksgiving and the impending Christmas shopping season, one family has different, much more somber concerns. Noah Biorkman is a five-year-old from Southlyon, Michigan who was diagnosed with cancer when he was three.
Noah isn't expected to make it to Christmas of this year, so his family is celebrating Christmas early. Noah's wish is to see how many Christmas cards he can get, and hundreds of thousands of strangers from around the world have been doing their part to help fufill his wish, sending in tons upon tons of cards.
Stephen Seal's PHS physics class decided to pitch in with the effort, with everyone in the class making several cards apiece to be sent to Noah and his family.
The onslaught of cards and gifts to Noah have amazed his family. "WOW," was what Noah's mother stated in a note on Facebook. The family has had to rent a storage shed for all the gifts of love that Noah and his family have received. The family stated that Noah is very weak now and does not get out of bed. Time is short for him. Today, the family has asked that no more cards be sent because they need to spend Noah's last days peacefully.
With cards in hand, Seal is looking for alternative sites for the cards his class has made. St. Jude's, service men and women, and other outlets are being discussed.
PHS Senior Kolyn Dossett, the organizer of the "carding" event, was very sad to hear the news about Noah but is determined that good intentions will not go wasted. "The handmade Christmas cards are just too good not brighten someone's holiday."

Thursday, 19 November 2009 |
Senior alto saxophone player Sierra Luke and senior tenor sax player Paul Ferguson recently made callbacks for Mississippi All-State Lions Band.
To prepare for tryouts, those auditioning have to learn twelve major scales, have a high range on their chromatic scale, play a prepared solo two minutes long or less, and then learn how to read difficult music for sight-reading. Those auditioning prepare for months to learn their complex solos, which was what Paul and Sierra had to do.
The practice was really vigorous, says Ferguson. It was really worth it though. When asked how he would feel if he should make the band, It would feel good.
Callbacks are Saturday, November 21 at Pearl High School. If one or both make this prestigious band, they will be traveling to Sydney, Australia to perform at a convention. |
