The Poplarville Upper Elementary Conservation Club (PUECC) was honored with a presentation by one of PUEs own teachers, Jennifer Cottrell. Ms. Cottrell, a 4th grade Language Arts teacher, talked to the club about Luna Moths. She raises the moths every year in her classroom. The club learned some interesting facts about Luna Moths. The PUECC meets once a month to discuss the importance of our Earths animals, land, forests, etc. The clubs sponsor, Ms. Sharon Sanders, has more interesting guests to present throughout the year. |

At PUE in Mrs. Beth Parkers music classes, students play BoomWhackers as one of their activities. BoomWhackers are colored plastic tubes of varying lengths that play different pitches based on their length. Once the students hold the BoomWhackers in their hands, the tendency is to beat them to keep rhythm. However, they are not rhythm sticks. They serve as melody sticks instead. Each different colored stick produces a separate pitch in the musical alphabet A G, therefore the student must use the stick at exactly the right time in the music to help emphasize the melody. BoomWhackers are a great educational tool to teach music, but are also fun to play. |

On Monday, October 26, 2009, Mr. Mel Hall's Ocean Bowl Team, AP Biology, Geology, and Oceanography classes attended a disaster preparedness simulation as part of the Oceans '09 conference being held on the coast this week. Students from 10 high schools from across the coast and southern Louisana attended the event.
According to Mr. Hall, the event "was an excellent experience of a real world situation."
WLOX covered the event and interviewed several PHS students. Click Here to view WLOX's report. |
