Senior Receives Lucky Day Scholarship |

 Ray Patten, a PHS tennis, archery, and football player, was recently awarded the Lucky Day scholarship from USM, a scholarship worth up to $14,000. Ray was chosen because of his incredible numbers of community service hours, which number over 300. Ray and his parents, Mike and Linda Patten, are excited about the opportunities thave become open to him.
According to the USM website, the gift from the Luckyday Foundation, founded by the late Frank R. Day of Jackson, Mississippi, funds scholarships for Mississippi high school seniors who demonstrate leadership skills, who are exemplary students, who are involved in their communities, and need financial assistance to pursue a higher education at USM.
The scholarship requires several things of its recipients, including:
ACT score of 20 or higher (or SAT score of 930 or higher)
High school GPA of 3.2 or higher (on 4.0 scale)
With this scholarship, Ray will get the opportunity to study abroad. "I'm glad I was chosen for this scholarship," Ray told me as he swiveled around in his chair. "It's a great honor." Ray admitted with a laugh that he couldn't think of anything better to say when I asked him about how he felt about the award. |

Senior Receives Leadership Award |

 A senior at Poplarville High School, Wren Nightengale, was recently awarded the 2009 Leadership Award, which is worth $15,500. To recieve this award, Wren wrote three essays about her involvement in the community.
I feel very honored to have been given this opportunity, says Wren of her award.
In order to keep her scholarship, Wren must maintain a grade point average above 3.0 and continue to demonstrate leadership qualities. Wren thinks that her parents, Jim and Sharon Nightengale, are very proud of her, and she feels happy to have pleased them. |

PHS Senior Signs With Southwest |

PHS senior Le'Terrio Henry recently signed a letter of intent to play football with Southwest Mississippi Community College. This gives Le'Terrio a full ride to the esteemed school, which is sure to make his family (including his mother, Gloria Travis, and his sister, Corretta , who were present at the signing) VERY happy. Le'Terrio is a defensive lineman for the PHS Hornets football team, and a 3 year letterman. He has lettered in powerlifting and track, as well as football.
Coach Teal, the head coach for the PHS football team, was extremely proud of Le'Terrio's accomplishment, saying, "Le'Terrio is a very coachable player. He will represent Poplarville well at Southwest. I believe he has lots of potential at the next level." |

MSP Student Wins Essay Contest |

Christopher Alexander a 7th grader at MSP was recently surprised when notified by his English teacher Mrs. Nicole Aube that he won 1st place in the State Agriculture Essay contest. Christopher read about the contest through his 4-H news letter and decided to enter it. After writing the essay using techniques learned in his
English class, he ask his teacher to read it and help with any last minute punctuation problems before submitting it. Three weeks later after returning form Mardi Gras Holiday's he was notified through an email that his essay was selected as the Mississippi State winner. He was jumping for joy when he read that he would receive a $100.00 prize check soon by mail. The essay will be sent to the National Agriculture Council in Washington DC to be judged on the National level in March. The national winner will receive a $1000.00 check and a trip to Washington DC to be awarded the national honor in early spring. Christopher said, he is honored to have won the state level but will be watching to see who wins the National.

 On February 19-20 th, the PHS FCCLA members were at competition. Family Career Community Leaders of America is a group that supports the family structure in society, encourages community involvement, and social cooperation. The students left for Jackson at 5:30 Thursday morning. The competition was held in the Regency Hotel>
Phillip Cowart, Bobby Duval, Brian Secrist in the culinary competition placed fourth, while Denairio Bolton and Raven Purnell took first prize. The culinary contest required the students to be able to receive random recipes and begin by assigning members to different tasks to cook it. Bolton and Purnell participated in a contest to design a business. Their business was an after school community service provider that helped teenagers get in touch with the community through afterschool activities. |
