Congratulations to Jessica Raziano for being one of the two students selected to represent Coast Electric Power Associations of the Mississippi Youth Leadership Program. Mrs. Debbie Williamson asked if she would like to join the competition which required her to acquire references and answer the questions of a panel. She agreed and was selected to attend a Youth Leadership Workshop which teaches team building and social skills in Jackson on March, 4-6; and a Youth Tour of Washington D.C. in June, 13-19. |

There will be an archery competition at the Poplarville High School Gym on January 31st, 2009, beginning at 10 AM. The competition will be open for anyone who wants to come, including students, parents, and community members. Pizza and other snacks will be provided.
The Archery team has been hard at work preparing for competitions, practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Middle School, and Mondays and Wednesdays at the high school. "I have about 50 names down of people who are interested in the team," Coach Barber told me. "But there are plenty of spots open for anyone that wants to join." |

The students at the Poplarville Upper Elementary School are all participating in the Reading Fair for 2009. For this project, each student will create a storyboard display of a fiction book of his or her choosing. Since there are two divisions in this competition, the students have the option to work either independently or with their families. Each Project will be graded on the ten elements of writing and creativity. The winner of each category in the PUE Reading Fair will then be entered into the Mississippi Regional Reading Fair, which is held annually in February or March. Judging for the school-wide competition will take place on Friday, January 23.
To dig a little deeper into the project, we talked to a fourth grade student, Kaitlyn B., about her storyboard. Kaitlyn was the winner of her division last year with her project on C.W. Andersons Billy and Blaze the Forest Fire, and she represented the school in the state competition. I enjoy doing this project very much. Last year I got to dress up as a cowgirl when I went to the state competition. It was fun! says Kaitlyn. This year, her project is on The Blind Colt by Glen Rounds. When asked about her project board, Kaitlyns eyes lit up as she told us all about it. I had a lot of fun making it, and I also learned some history, she said. It is inspiring to see such enthusiasm about a project in young students. |
