On Tuesday, October 28, 2008, exactly one week before the highly anticipated national election, Poplarville High School participated in the statewide mock elections sponsored by the Mississippi Secretary of State's office.
As their adult counterpoints will do on November 4, the students stood in line to cast their vote for presidential, senatorial, and representative candidates. The PHS cafeteria served as the polling place where multiple voting booths were set up. Students from the PHS Beta Club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Barlow and Senor Ramirez, served as poll workers handing out scantron ballots and ballots provided by the Mississippi Secretary of State's Promote the Vote initiative.
According to the office's website, "since its (Promote the Vote) inception in 1996, nearly one million Mississippi students have participated in Promote The Vote.
Students have garnered an increased awareness and understanding of the
democratic process, and have been encouraged to get involved
politically. By providing a vehicle for students to participate in the
election process, we hope to create a generation of informed voting
adults."
Delbert Hoseman, our Secretary of State, will release the statewide results today, October 29th, sometime after five.
The results from PHS's mock election are:
Special
Election U.S. Senator:
Ronnie
Musgrove 103,
Roger
Wicker 141
U.S.
Representative District 4:
John
McCay III 127,
Gene
Taylor 128

To celebrate the coming of Fall
students in Mrs. Kathy Tynes and Ms Betty Stanfords kindergarten class traveled
to Collins, MS to The Pumpkin Patch. Students walked through a hay maze with
assistance of Farmer Brown (Shelly Brown) turning north, south, east and west
trying to figure out how to get out. Next, they went to The Pumpkin Patch and
choose a pumpkin.
The Pumpkin Patch had all different kinds of colors, sizes,
and shapes pumpkins. Students played on the playground
that
consisted of a old timey tire swing,
corn box, rope tree swing, and a merry-go-round. It was a great learning
experience for all! |
