Tuesday, 20 May 2008 |
Students in Lee Masons 7 th grade math class have been hard at work constructing model bridges using toothpicks. Each students was given a role in the group and worked as an accountant, architect, carpenter, transportation chief, or project director. Students worked together to design a bridge and drew blueprints using a chosen scale factor.
Students worked all last week to complete their bridges according to the building code guidelines. There were many stipulations that had to be followed during the project, and students were graded according to how they followed the project rules. Students were given a budget of $2,000,000 which seemed like a lot until the students found out that each toothpick cost $10,000. The land on which their bridge was built cost $500,000. Students also had to pay for other materials such as glue and blueprint paper. Students completed order forms and wrote checks for their supplies and had to keep a balance sheet current throughout the project. The project ended with a test to see how much weight each bridge could support. The project is designed to demonstrate the importance of math skills in everyday life. |

The students in Ms.
Cottrells class received their packet of Symbolic Monarchs this week. The
Monarchs were sent from their overwintering location, Michoacan, Mexico.
In Michoacan, they were cared for by students in María Juana Gómez Pérezs
6 th grade class at Arim Armado
Nervo Elementary School.
In their envelope, the
students in Ms. Cottrells class found eight butterflies. The butterflies that
the PUE students received were sent to Mexico
in the fall by students from New York, Connecticut, Georgia,
and New Jersey.
The students also received a letter from the teacher and a student at Armado Nervo
Elementary School. The
letter was written in Spanish. Thanks to Senora Magda Wisard, the students were
able to read the letter in English.
The students visited Journey
Norths website to find out which schools received the butterflies they sent to
Mexico.
So far, PUE butterflies have been found in Alabama
and Pennsylvania.
As you can see from the photograph,
the students are excited about the results of their year long project. The
butterflies that were sent to PUE are on display in the 5 th grade
hall. You can view the results of the annual Symbolic Migration at www.journeynorth.org.
