BK Tickets are on Sale

PHS Players production of “The Bachelor King”, written by Martin A. Follose and produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., Englewood, Colorado is about three weeks away. Tickets are on sale, beginning April 1^st, at the PHS Office and also at the Spider Lily Café both on Hwy 53 in Poplarville. Limited seating is available for the two performances so the public is urged to get their tickets early. Two performances will be held, opening night will be Saturday April 26^th at 7PM and a Sunday Matinee on April 27^th at 3PM. All performances will be held at the Poplarville High School cafeteria.

Cost for the tickets will be $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children younger than school age, $3.00 for senior citizens, and $3.00 for any student with a current school ID. Students from all school systems will be able to attend for the $3.00 fee with an ID from their school.

PHS Players are Giving It All They Got

The PHS Players are working very hard to get ready for the production of “The Bachelor King” on April 26 and 27. Both the crew and cast are working on the flats that will stand on the stage to simulate walls and hide the happenings of backstage. They have recently completed building them and applying a finely woven cotton fabric called muslin. After the flats are cleaned, the players plan to make them fire-resistant, paint them, put on the necessary hardware, and set them up using tripod legs on the stage.

Also basic maintenance work must be completed prior to the production. The curtains need to be trimmed; the stage needs to be cleared and cleaned well; the make-up needs to be sorted out and stored. Make-up director Kerri B. with the help of Carolyn T., are in charge of figuring out what needs to be ordered in time for the play.

However, pre-production is not all hard work. Student Producer, Randy G. dressed in a purple sequined dress to the amusement of the cast and crew.

The cast of “The Bachelor King” have memorized their lines for and blocked, or decided the locations of actors, the first and second acts.

Tickets for the production will go on sale Tuesday, April 1 at the high school office. The play will be held on April 26 at 7pm and April 27 at 2pm in the PHS cafeteria. See you there!

No Country For Old Men

Go see this movie. With that said, I could end this article right now because that’s all you really need to know. But, we all realize that you people are waiting on bated breath to hear what little old me has to say (note my sarcasm), so here it goes…

No Country is a tantalizing tale filled with drug deals gone wrong, psychotic mercenaries, and money, money, money. While out hunting in the Texas back country, unsuspecting good ol’ boy Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) stumbles across what looks like just another drug exchange gone bad. But with this there’s something different…and very tempting. Moss finds the untouched drug money—2 million dollars cash. With all the drug runners dead, Llewelyn thinks it’s safe to take the money, but he’s wrong—dead wrong.

So begins the chase that makes up most of the movie. Llewelyn is being pursued by a painfully calm psycho named Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), and Chigurh, in turn, is being chased by gritty old Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones.) What erupts from this hunt is nothing short of electrifying. The chase will keep you on the edge of your seat, make bite your nails and scream at the TV.

Probably the most unique thing about the whole plot of the story is that the three main characters never once come in contact with each other in the entirety of the film. This makes Chigurh’s character even more frightening—the fact that he can inspire fear from afar. The coloring of the film is unique as well. Each character is shot differently. Most scenes featuring Chigurh are dimly lit and darkly colored, which makes his performance even more sinister. Contrarily, scenes with Llewelyn are full of natural and earthy tones, and Brolin just blends in with the background—this is possibly some kind of symbolism of his character’s urge to hide from the inevitable. One of my personal favorite things about this film is that all the actors do fantastic southern accents—something that I find rare in most movies.

Javier Bardem won an Oscar for best supporting actor for No Country and once you watch it, you can see why. His performance as the frighteningly composed Chigurh is just plain…well scary. He kills indiscriminately, and has no qualms about it whatsoever. Tommy Lee Jones does what he was born to do—play the smart-alecky but good-hearted sheriff. Josh Brolin (son of famous actor James Brolin) is wonderful as the even-tempered Llewelyn. All through the movie, no matter how dangerous the situation gets, Llewelyn treats it with detached humor. Finally, Kelly MacDonald is heartbreaking as Llewelyn’s mealy-mouthed wife Carla Jean. She keeps her quiet, faithfully-calm demeanor until the very end of the movie, when she gets the last word in on Chigurh.

But no matter how much I talk about this movie, I still can’t describe how wonderful it is.

Go rent it and see for yourself.

In Celebration of Career & Technical Month, PHS Career Development Center held the 2^nd Annual Hornet Pride T-Shirt Design Contest. Pictured above is Shelbi H., a PHS Senior and co-op student, who submitted the winning design.

The shirt is solid grey and the back of the shirt has a Hornet and the slogan “You Bring’ em… We’ll sting ‘em…”

This shirt is available for sale at all of the schools. The price is $10 for all sizes. To place an order, contact any Co-Op Student or your school office. Deadline for orders is April 7, 2008.
