Lionel Clark, the Poplarville
School District art
teacher and resident of Diamondhead, suffered severe damage to his home during
merciless Hurricane Katrina. We will be following the renovation and
restoration of Mr. Lionel Clark?s home throughout the year and keeping you
posted on his progress.
Nine feet of water rose in his one-story home as they took
shelter in a local church. He returned to his home as soon as possible, and
after driving as close as he could, walked for three-quarters of a mile in
floodwater, climbing over downed power lines?which he reports “is not the best
idea.”

Poplarville
School District has
suffered its share of damage from Hurricane Katrina. While every school in the
district has been damaged, the amount of damage at each school varies.
Poplarville Lower Elementary suffered roof damage on the
older part of the building, and the roof is currently being repaired. The upper elementary, on the other hand,
fared much better in the storm suffering only mild damage to the building.

On September 5, 2005 President George W. Bush visited Poplarville, Mississippi
to review the destruction brought by Hurricane Katrina. While touring the
devastated area, Bush met with many locals including Poplarville High School?s
own Allan Langloise and Straddford Goins.
“He was really nice. It showed me Ol?George has a sensitive,
caring side.” Allan L. said when asked what he thought of the President. “He
asked about our house and any damages we received during the storm. We also met
Laura Bush and Governor Barber and his wife, they didn?t talk much.” |
