Once again, Poplarville High School was well represented at the Area 3
Special Olympics Summer Games held at Stennis Space Center, which were
held Saturday, April 2.
Alissa Smith, a PHS Senior, and John Magee, a Sophomore, both competed
in the 50 yard dash and the running long jump. Alissa took first place
in both events, while John was awarded first and second place,
respectively.
The Stennis Games are held each spring, and boast a large number of
special athletes. The Opening Ceremonies were very special to Alissa
and John this year because the MSP and PHS Choirs were featured as they
sang a very beautiful rendition of our national anthem. |

A few days ago, Mrs. Cindy Carroll’s Zoology class had a big surprise.
What they thought to be just a normal bird walked into their classroom.
A student in this class said “We opened the door and it just walked
in!” They soon found out that this was not just a normal bird.
This
pigeon was a homing pigeon that flew from Tulsa, Oklahoma. It had a
band around its leg with the owner’s information. Ms. Carroll kept the
pigeon in her classroom and then contacted the owner of this bird. This
pigeon was part of the American Racing Pigeon Union. A representative
for this organization came to the school and picked up the pigeon to
take it back to its home. For more information on this organization,
you can visit the website: www.pigeon.org or www.npausa.com |

The Business & Computer Technology I and II classes are
participating in a ten-week Stock Market Simulation through the
Mississippi Council on Economic Education. The students are given a
fictitious $100,000 to buy and sell stocks within their group. The top
team in the state with the highest portfolio percentage increase will
win a free trip to tour the New Yock Stock Exchange. We would like to
thank the Poplarville Foundation for providing us with a grant to pay
the enrollment fees for the teams and Mr. Jon Williams of Williams
Financial Group who spoke to the students March 15 about investments. |

Alan J. Wheat, son of Joseph and Penney Wheat from Amacker Town, was
named Poplarville High School's STAR Student of 2005 earlier this year.
Alan is also the President of the Poplarville High School Student
Council and is a USM Honors Scholarship recipient. The STAR Student
award is given to the senior with academic excellence based mostly on
ACT scores and scholastic averages. The STAR Student is asked to choose
a STAR Teacher who has made the greatest contribution toward the
student's academic achievements. Alan designated Steve Seal as his STAR
Teacher.
Alan and his chosen STAR Teacher, Steve Seal, attended the Education
Celebration at Mississippi College on April 8, 2005. 500 STAR Students
and STAR Teachers received recognition at the Education Celebration.
This was Mr. Seal's second time to be named the STAR Teacher, as he was
elected in 2001 as well. |
