By creating a replica made from Diet Coke and Mentos, the students now have a visual of a volcanic eruption.

We are full of “HOT AIR”
Upper Elementary

PUE20120201.JPG

Mrs. Hester’s 5thgrade class at Poplarville Upper Elementary began a unit on The Atmosphere and Weather by experimenting with a Solar Tube.  Students inflated a solar tube and predicted what would happen when placed outside.  Students predicted that it would lie on the ground or blow away with the wind.  To their amazement, the Solar Tube rose from the ground when placed in the heat.  Students learned that hot air is less dense than cool air, that black objects absorb heat faster than the lighter colored surroundings, that gases expand when heated, and that volume and temperature are directly related. As one increases, the other increases.  Students are excited to begin the unit on Earth’s Atmosphere and Weather.
