COVID-19: Week 3 Update

Parents/Guardians:

You answered the call!  Our teachers have made over 1,400 phone calls to parents this week.  These phone calls have been helpful in providing clarification on student work, accessing student needs, and providing answers to many of your questions.   If you have not received a phone call from one of your child’s teachers, please reach out to one of them using the phone number that they have previously been using to communicate with you.  Our teachers are working Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm and will return your call or text within 24 hours.

At this time school is set to resume on April 20, 2020, for the Poplarville School District.  However, as with all timelines and activities concerning COVID-19, this is subject to change.

We are working to provide you with the answer to all your questions.  Below is a summary of the updates we have for now:

Graduation for the Class of 2020

Current seniors who meet all district and state requirements may graduate this school year. The requirement that students take end-of-course assessments in Algebra I, English II, Biology and U.S. History has been suspended for seniors because these assessments cannot be administered in spring 2020. Statewide, students are required to earn a minimum of 24 Carnegie units to graduate.

Students Scheduled to Take High School End-of-Course Assessments

Any student in grades 7 through 12 who is currently enrolled in Algebra I, Biology, English II and/or U. S. History during the 2019-20 school year will not be required to take and/or pass the corresponding end-of-course subject area test(s) or meet one of the options in lieu of passing the test(s) to meet graduation requirements.

3rd Graders

Current 3rd graders will be promoted to 4th grade for the 2020-21 school year if the student meets all other district requirements for promotion.

Spring  Break

Poplarville School District will observe Spring Break the week of April 6-10.  We will begin a new tradition of designating Spring Break as Community Spirit Week. More information will be posted on the school website next week. Meals will not be served during the week of Spring Break.

Student Work

Students should work on the materials that were provided by their teacher.  Additional assignments are being developed and will be mailed if necessary.  If your child needs additional activities in the meantime, please check the district’s website for links to suggested educational sites.

Feeding Program

March 30-April 3:  Meals will be served from 11 am to 1 pm at MSP

Individual Questions

If you have questions or concerns please contact your child’s teacher through text or email.   Please provide a brief description of how they can assist you.

We are currently working on policy revisions that need to be approved by our school board and will pass along any updates as they become available.  Another update will be provided next Friday.
