PHS New Head Football Coach
High School News

The past few years, Poplarville High School has gone through an array of coaches; losing coaches, gaining coaches—it’s all been a very rocky ride for PHS athletes. Now, yet another figure is stepping into the football head coaching position: Chris Teal. The moment I sat down with the new coach I was immediately drawn to him. I could tell that he was obviously a man of ambition and great spirit. And this was all before he even opened his mouth.

It was very telling that Teal was excited about his move to PHS. “As you can see, I’m sporting my green,” he said to me, indicating to his shirt. “I’m real excited to be coming to Poplarville. I’m happy I’m coaching a team that’s actually in a town,” he told me. “It’s a big, big difference.” Teal is thrilled about coming to Poplarville, where the fan base has been growing tremendously the past few years. “I’m big on tradition,” Teal said. “I understand that Poplarville has a lot of tradition, and I’m not trying to change that.”

Teal is optimistic about the young team he has. “We’re going to be competitive,” he said. “I know this sounds cliché, but it’s going to be up to us whether or not we win.”

He is already confident in the boys and his coaching staff. “I’ve inherited a fantastic coaching staff,” he told me. “They are just so valuable to me, and I’m glad that they wanted to stay.”

Football players are excited about the new coach as well. “He’s got a good work ethic,” said Gage Whitten, who will be the starting defensive end next year. “He’s got what it takes to win.”

All in all, Teal seems to have genuine enthusiasm for both football and the Hornets. “I want to instill the belief that we can win,” he said. “We’ve got a great opportunity to win against a bunch of good teams.”

Teal has been a coach for 12 years and he has spent four of those years a Pearl River Central High School. He’s a native Georgian who was a quarterback at the University of West Georgia.

Tornado in Tupelo
High School News

Apparently tornadoes don’t only hate trailer parks and Kansas—the also hate golfers staying in hotels. Last Thursday, Trent Pittman and Jason Daniels both encountered a deadly tornado while at the state golf tournament in Tupelo. “We were awake at 8:12 am watching the news,” Pittman told me. “We knew it was about to get bad.”

And it did. Soon after that a tornado ripped through the parking lot of the Jameson Inn. Pittman creatively illustrated a map to help me understand how the whole ordeal went down. “My brother went outside on the balcony and saw everyone pointing,” he said, drawing a line to the left on the paper. “And there was the tornado.” He scribbled a black swirl on the paper to emphasize the word. “So, me and my brother went and got in the bathroom.”

“It’s just like on TV,” Pittman said. “Sounds like a train, all that stuff. It went around the back of the hotel and tore down trees, fences, everything.” Jason was across the parking lot with his family during the whole experience. After a few minutes, everything got calm. “The system moved northeast and went up again.” he began to describe the cloud formation to me, excitedly. “It was so cool: the clouds were moving counterclockwise and the lower clouds were being sucked up into the upper ones. But it was calm and quiet. Really eerie.”
