PHS Band All Superior
High School News
On March 9, 2010, the high school band went to concert competition in Pearl, bringing in an all superior rating in both prepared and sight reading.

Leading up to this day, the high school band has been preparing tirelessly for state competition. After a disappointing day at prefest in Ellisville, the band made a last minute adjustment in their program, playing The Battle Pavane in place of Pageant. In the end, they had a line up of Flourish for Wind Bands as their warm-up, a piece with varying tempos and styles. They went from there to a James Sclater piece commissioned just for the Poplarville Band - …For Fallen Heroes. This piece was dedicated to those who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and included trumpet solos from freshman Brennon N., a flute solo from senior Zorana B., and snare drum solos from freshman Donnie L. To close, they played The Battle Pavane, which was a slower piece that was composed in 1551. The arrangement highlighted each section of the band and made each player very exposed. For this, they received two superior ratings and one excellent rating, which ended up with their score as 1 – superior.

“You guys did great,” said director Wilson Wise to his band after this performance.

Sight reading has always proved to be a challenge for every band. A piece of music is shown to the band that they’ve never seen before. They’re given nine minutes to review over it – they’re allowed to sing, clap their rhythms, air play, or whatever else they feel like they should do. After the nine minutes, a judge calls time and they must play the piece, however good or bad it may be. The band handled this well and their scores reflected it – all superiors from each of the three judges.

With these superior ratings and getting all superior at the state marching festival in October, the band has an overall superior rating for the year – the first time this has happened with Wise as director.

What will the band do now? They’re planning on falling into a more relaxed state and preparing for their spring concert in the park this May. At this concert, they will receive their medals for being an overall superior band at marching, prepared concert, and sight reading.

Congratulations to the band and all that helped them along this tiring journey. It was a bit rough at times, but any band member could easily say that it was all worth it.

Middle School Play
Middle School News
The Middle School of Poplarville drama club will present, “Remains to be Seen” By: Lee Mueller, April 8th 6 p.m.

The play is a dinner theatre murder mystery. Guests will receive pizza, drinks, and dessert during the play. “Remains to be Seen” starts off with a dead body being found in a steamer trunk on the back of a "U-Do-It" rental truck. But as Detective Goodman and Badman find, it's not as easy as tracking down the last person who rented the truck. It seems the "trunk" has been in the truck for a while. It has been rented many times and traveled to many cities by many mysterious characters. There's Iggy the 'bookie' lounge host. Madame DuBoys, the eccentric washed up film star, and the talentless lounge actors Nicky Niagra and Edie Buffet. Who left the trunk on the truck? Federal Agents Muledeer and Sullen are hot on the trail. Could it be a haphazard homicide by one of the shady characters? Or, could it be "alien abduction” and murder with a major Government cover-up as Agent Muledeer suspects?

Tickets are $3.00 (includes dinner). Tickets can be purchased at the Middle School or through a middle school drama club actor. Half of ticket sales will be donated to The American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti. Get your ticket while they last. See you at the show!

High School News
Following a two-day visit to Poplarville High School, a team of five educators will recommend that PHS be reaccredited by SACS CASI for a five-year period.  The recommendation must be approved first by the Mississippi council of SACS CASI and then by AdvancEd, the national parent organization of SACS CASI.

Five educators from other schools in south Mississippi made up the visiting team.  The team toured the campus, visited classrooms, and interviewed students, teachers, parents, staff, and business people from the community.  A final report of their findings will be sent to Principal Ilene Davis in about a month.

PHS Fish Fighters
High School News
The PHS Fish Fighters are preparing to represent the Poplarville School District and the Central Gulf South region in the national competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, NOSB. This will be the third time for our NOSB team to go to nationals, having gone in 2004 and 2007.

Coach Mel Hall says “This year we’ve pulled out all the stops, going far and wide to ask for help from all sources.” Hall says “we intend to place in this year’s competition, something a team from our region has never done.”

The Fish Fighters are: Becky Starke, Ben Mitchell, Elizabeth Jones, Eric Wells, Haylee Burge, Jared Stewart, Jonathan Broom, Justin Williams, Kaitlyn Dupont, Kendell Lee, Landon Tynes, Melanie Hall, Nicholas Aube, Nigel Simmons, Shelby Ramming, Spencer Bayhi, Stephen Harris, and Tommy Patten In this year’s Hurricane Bowl, held at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab, the B Team Fish Fighters took 4th place in addition to A Team winning the competition. Photos of the 1st and 4th place Fish Fighters are shown in addition to the team photograph.

“We are looking for guest speakers to help with our preparation,” Mr. Hall says. “Having been to this dance before, I know how difficult the questions will be.” In 2004 the Fish Fighters, or “Poplarvillage People”, as they called themselves then, went to Charleston, SC to compete in the national competition. In 2007 the Fish Fighters went to Stony Brook, NY to compete. In Charleston the team did not win any competition and in Stony Brook the team managed to tie one competition while losing the others.  The Fish Fighters did bring home high honors in both competitions, the Admiral James D. Watkins Sportsmanship award. The sportsmanship award is the final award presented and is revered amongst NOSB teams. “We are honored to have won the Watkins Sportsmanship award both times we went, we want a trophy this time,” says Hall. Jonathan Broom, the team’s captain, says “We’re prepared for the competition,” in his quite optimistic tone.

Guest speakers from the Navy’s Oceanographic office, NAVO, at John C. Stennis Space Center have visited the team several times since winning regional on February 6th. Quent Burge and Henry Charry of NAVO have visited and Kevin Hart, Sheldon Powe, and Lane Reynolds of NAVO have all planned visits before the team leaves for St. Petersburg.  In addition, the laboratory and staff at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab will host the Fish Fighters thanks to Sam Clardy and Joe Griffitt and The Aquarium of the Americas will open their doors for a behind the scene peek at operating an aquarium thanks to Tricia LeBlanc.
