Middle School Play
Middle School News
The Middle School of Poplarville drama club will present, “Remains to be Seen” By: Lee Mueller, April 8th 6 p.m.

The play is a dinner theatre murder mystery. Guests will receive pizza, drinks, and dessert during the play. “Remains to be Seen” starts off with a dead body being found in a steamer trunk on the back of a "U-Do-It" rental truck. But as Detective Goodman and Badman find, it's not as easy as tracking down the last person who rented the truck. It seems the "trunk" has been in the truck for a while. It has been rented many times and traveled to many cities by many mysterious characters. There's Iggy the 'bookie' lounge host. Madame DuBoys, the eccentric washed up film star, and the talentless lounge actors Nicky Niagra and Edie Buffet. Who left the trunk on the truck? Federal Agents Muledeer and Sullen are hot on the trail. Could it be a haphazard homicide by one of the shady characters? Or, could it be "alien abduction” and murder with a major Government cover-up as Agent Muledeer suspects?

Tickets are $3.00 (includes dinner). Tickets can be purchased at the Middle School or through a middle school drama club actor. Half of ticket sales will be donated to The American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti. Get your ticket while they last. See you at the show!

SACS
High School News
Following a two-day visit to Poplarville High School, a team of five educators will recommend that PHS be reaccredited by SACS CASI for a five-year period.  The recommendation must be approved first by the Mississippi council of SACS CASI and then by AdvancEd, the national parent organization of SACS CASI.

Five educators from other schools in south Mississippi made up the visiting team.  The team toured the campus, visited classrooms, and interviewed students, teachers, parents, staff, and business people from the community.  A final report of their findings will be sent to Principal Ilene Davis in about a month.

AdvancED is the unified organization of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).

AdvancED is dedicated to advancing excellence in education worldwide through accreditation, research, and professional services.   AdvancED creates the world's largest education community, representing 27,000 public and private schools and districts across the United States and in 65 countries worldwide, educating 15 million students.

PHS Fish Fighters
High School News
The PHS Fish Fighters are preparing to represent the Poplarville School District and the Central Gulf South region in the national competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, NOSB. This will be the third time for our NOSB team to go to nationals, having gone in 2004 and 2007.

Coach Mel Hall says “This year we’ve pulled out all the stops, going far and wide to ask for help from all sources.” Hall says “we intend to place in this year’s competition, something a team from our region has never done.”

The Fish Fighters are: Becky Starke, Ben Mitchell, Elizabeth Jones, Eric Wells, Haylee Burge, Jared Stewart, Jonathan Broom, Justin Williams, Kaitlyn Dupont, Kendell Lee, Landon Tynes, Melanie Hall, Nicholas Aube, Nigel Simmons, Shelby Ramming, Spencer Bayhi, Stephen Harris, and Tommy Patten In this year’s Hurricane Bowl, held at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab, the B Team Fish Fighters took 4th place in addition to A Team winning the competition. Photos of the 1st and 4th place Fish Fighters are shown in addition to the team photograph.

“We are looking for guest speakers to help with our preparation,” Mr. Hall says. “Having been to this dance before, I know how difficult the questions will be.” In 2004 the Fish Fighters, or “Poplarvillage People”, as they called themselves then, went to Charleston, SC to compete in the national competition. In 2007 the Fish Fighters went to Stony Brook, NY to compete. In Charleston the team did not win any competition and in Stony Brook the team managed to tie one competition while losing the others.  The Fish Fighters did bring home high honors in both competitions, the Admiral James D. Watkins Sportsmanship award. The sportsmanship award is the final award presented and is revered amongst NOSB teams. “We are honored to have won the Watkins Sportsmanship award both times we went, we want a trophy this time,” says Hall. Jonathan Broom, the team’s captain, says “We’re prepared for the competition,” in his quite optimistic tone.

Guest speakers from the Navy’s Oceanographic office, NAVO, at John C. Stennis Space Center have visited the team several times since winning regional on February 6th. Quent Burge and Henry Charry of NAVO have visited and Kevin Hart, Sheldon Powe, and Lane Reynolds of NAVO have all planned visits before the team leaves for St. Petersburg.  In addition, the laboratory and staff at USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab will host the Fish Fighters thanks to Sam Clardy and Joe Griffitt and The Aquarium of the Americas will open their doors for a behind the scene peek at operating an aquarium thanks to Tricia LeBlanc.

Poplarville High School Choir District Contest
High School News
On February 23, 2010 The Poplarville High School Choir traveled to district competition.  They competed in many areas.  The choir brought a SATB (soprano , alto, tenor, bass) group, a SSA (girls)group, and an mixed ensemble group (small girls and boys).  They received Excellent ratings in all their performing groups.  However they brought home a Superior Trophy in sight reading.  This is a huge accomplishment because to sight read they must be able to sing a piece of music that they have never seen before for the judges and be rated on accuracy.

They PHS Choir will continue to work on these pieces to perform for their spring concert coming up soon.  The accomplishments at this competition have made their director and their school very proud.

The production dates are April 30th, May 1st and May 2nd “Harvey” is a play about a man, Elwood, who sees an imaginary rabbit. He's sent to a mental institution and eventually a pivotal question is brought up. I recommend pleasant.”

Over the past five years the Theatre/Film class has worked with hundreds of students, from the 80 plus students who were involved in the 2007 production of “Grease”, to the 20 students who were involved in the 2006 production of “Whodunit” and “If Girls Asked Boys”. Theatre/Film teacher Mel Hall has produced six plays since taking over the department in 2005-06 school year.

Chumley, the local psychiatrist who initially attempts to treat Elwood and then comes to see the imaginary rabbit himself; Conner Hodge as Dr. Lyman Sanderson, an employee of Dr. Chumley who has a love-hate relationship with nurse Kelly; Gabby Bilbo as Ruth Kelly, R.N., also an employee of Dr. Chumley who is involved with Dr. Sanderson; Jessica Raziano is Judge Oprah Gaffney, the Dowd family lawyer who arranges for Elwood's commitment; Sierra Luke as Ethel Chauvenet, a longtime friend of the Dowds and part of the social circle of the town; Ashleigh Davis as Betty Chumley, wife of Dr. Chumley and aware of Elwood's imaginary friend; Glenn Camardelle as Wilson, the muscle at Dr. Chumley's sanitarium; Matthew Weatherholt as the cab driver who delivers common sense philosophy; and Bridget Thrash as Miss Johnson, a cateress for the social events in the town. In addition Corina Smith, Katelyn Ducote, Miranda Buckley, Shelby Ramming, Victoria Mitchell, Marie Cavanaugh, Brice Smith, Lexie Fircke, Sylvia Ducote, and Joshua Davis have been cast as town's people.

In addition to the cast, a group of over 20 students will run the show as the crew. The crew for “Harvey” includes:

Tiernay Henry, Angela Gonzales, LaKetha Fowler, Austin Slade, Kendra Hoosen, Dain Saucier, Rebekah Broom, Cassye Owen, Brian Secrist, Dakota Kern, Joshua Mitchell, Amber Dardar, John Antonetti, and Nikole Talkington. FBLA Fundraiser for Earth Day 2010
High School News
FBLA members at PHS are raising funds in order to go to Fairhope, Alabama, in April for Earth Day Mobile Bay 2010. This will be the second year the students will attend the festival.  Last year the club took all scrap computers from the high school and transported them to the Fairhope Public Works Department for recycling.  We hope to take scrap electronics from some of the other schools in the district this year.
We will be using the Funding Factory rewards program to collect old cell phones and printer ink cartridges for recycling. Please save all such items and donate them to the FBLA so that this year’s trip can be even better than the last.  Your items can be dropped off at the Career Development Center or at the main office at PHS, or we will pick up at any local business within the city limits. Please contact Mrs. Donna Storrs at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call the CDC office at (601) 795- 8343.
